In 1999 I brought a couple of orchids home from a trip to Hawaii and they accidentally bloomed again. I wanted to know more and I went to a class at the Napa Recreation Department. From that moment I was hooked and the collection has grown ever since. I study orchids and get to see many spectacular orchids each month at orchid society meetings and at other greenhouses.

My own collection contains around 500 plants and 150 species in a 9 x 12 x 9 greenhouse. That seems pretty small space for that many plants and it is. No neat benches, more like a jungle with a number of micro climates available. If you want to see what's in my orchid collection, check Backbulb.com. Besides my collection, I maintain a large private collection in Sonoma. That gives me access to more micro-climates and more varieties of orchids to play with.

I am on a budget. I try to add to my collection in the most economical fashion possible. That is how I became interested in backbulbs and small divisions that are often tossed out. I have more time than money and I am willing to invest two or three years in a new species.

My other passion is my dog Maggie and her dog pack, the Alston Little Rascals. Alston Park is an amazing Napa resource, 150 acres of space for dogs to run and play. We go there every day.
