I have met Dr. Rudolph and she is an electric person who is obviously a mover-and-shaker ofRead More tremendous talent. Also very committed to diversity, the utilization of creative teaching methods, and fostering an inclusive chain of command that give everybody the opportunity to make important contributions. Napa Valley College would be extremely lucky to secure her as its president.

As a resident of the Napa Valley and a nonprofit community leader, I've come to know and respect Dr.Read More Kimberlee Messina for her business acumen, her academic administration skills, her community-building skills, and her vision for the future of our community. I'm particularly impressed with Dr. Messina's connection to the Latino community and her sensitivity for the unique and growing academic needs of this burgeoning demographic. Dr. Messina understands leadership, and knows what it takes to lead the Napa Valley College into the future. I've worked with Dr. Messina on a variety of community initiatives, and I've been inspired by her leadership and relationship-building skills, as well as the quality and integrity of her vision. Without vision, a people perish, and Dr. Messina has the right vision for the future of the Napa Valley College.

Dr. Messina's bio above is very low-key compared with her many outstanding accomplishments andRead More achievements in the areas of promoting student/faculty/community learning outcomes/successes/new programming. Kimberlee is an articulate, compassionate, and dynamic leader. She visited the State of California as a guest speaker, and has pioneered grant-funded and other programs that offer direct facilitation of student learning (even in the face of an otherwise impossible economic situtation). I had the opportunity to work for/with Dr. Messina for over 5 years. We had hoped that she would have become our President at SRJC. However, Dr. Messina is a Napa Valley resident; we can understand why her professional abilities and considerable passion for education have inspired her to make a difference closer to home. Dr. Messina will be an outstanding catalyst for appropriate growth and change at NVC and in the Napa region. She also speaks Spanish fluently and offers her time for local causes. Well, we love her, and hope the same for NVC students/faculty/staff/community.

Hi Alex: Yes, good points about the discrepancies between the white students' dropout rate and thoseRead More of color. Definitely helps focus where the work needs to be done. Also glad to see the graduation rates rising in general. Good work, Napa County schools!
Alex Shantz April 12, 2013 at 02:29 am
This is great news overall! Still, dropout rates of 22.2 percent among African-Americans and 22.1Read More percent among Hispanic students is still significant. We really need to start focusing on how to close the achievement gap. From what I could gather, it appears the dropout rate for white students is around 8%. There is a significant gap there. Still, I am glad that there are positive gains all around.

Prop 37 lost because it was a crappy law Voters are not that dumb. All I got from the Video is theRead More Owner of B&J " A Chain store doing ok in America Run By a mega Corp " Is a borderline Communist and confirmed hypocrite. The video was ok for a first try The kids may want to hope the Corporations there Parents work for don't see it.

It's nice to see that young people get it,we could all learn from them. Also they could learn that aRead More trade union is the only friend to the greedy corporation. It is the only thing that levels the playing field.

Kelly Shriner Snowder. My favorite teachers were Ms D Bird at Silverado English 9th grade. And thenRead More I have another at Vintage High School Mrs. L McDonald. They both were my mentors. Always there for me. and even after I graduated and had my children at Napa High Ms. Bird remembered me and I am still friends with Mrs. McDonald. Thank you both very much for being there through my hardest years. I love you both. YOU BOTH WERE AND STILL ARE AMAZING.

People have the right to post unless they are abusive. I disagree with the guy as much as anyone,Read More but the criticisms seem just as useless much of the time. I suppose I am feeding into it by criticizing the criticizers. I do however wonder if the Kid, and those who share his somewhat happy sentiments towards the deaths of others, limit themselves to accidents which seem to have shown the person could have hurt someone else in the future, or whether they just feel there version of stupid people should die in general. After all if your stupid you are at potential risk of hurting others right?

But the above squable and bickering leads to open an evolution of topic. The origin or content of theRead More preceeding comments is not at all entertaining, humorous or informational, but it does beg one to question what kind of example are the adults who post off topic diareaha with the tone of playground bullies- what kind of example are they for the younger members of their families and young readers. Poor form. Not to linger and realisticly, Im sure we all have had times of indiscretion. I for one see a type of 'FaceBook Syndrome' hissing right below the surface and hiding behind our 5th amendment. FaceBook is anti-social media and thats a whole seperate topic. Where is the humanity and simplicity of reason? Some of us still remember the Golden Rules that gentle and strong mothers fed down to us. Basic kind and balanced rules that are increadingly abandoned by wreckless bullies with inflated egos. Never thought I would say it, but thanks for regualting this forum cause my kids read Napa Patch all the time As always- Bless your heart Louisa. You continue to be a local treasure and I admire the sanity you coax out of the most colorful chaos p.s. im tryen speak text so this post get a bit scrambled in the translation. Candy Capone

I keep reading about this service but can't find information on how to USE this service. EspeciallyRead More for kids like mine who do not have cell phones.
MICHAEL P WILSON "Independent Kid" April 20, 2013 at 03:22 pm
The solution is the problem why are 12 13 14 15 Year olds running around with their own CellularRead More Phones to text and Chat online? Why are the parents not doing a better job monitoring the problem? I get that technology is at the point a fully loaded Smart Phone can be had for $30 a month But does a 14 year old need one? In the case of 15-year-old Audrie Pott Where were Mom and Dad What was your 15 Year old Little girl doing drinking at a party? Yes What allegedly happened to here is a sick act.

Where do the schools get the money for these computers? If NHS and Vintage get money from the sameRead More pool, why does Vintage have twice as many computers with only 128 more students? Does New Tech get money from the same pool or are they in a different pool because they are an alternative school?
Loui Loui March 21, 2013 at 12:33 pm
I agree with A. My daughter attends Vintage and is receiving a great education. She loves theRead More classes and sports that are offered, and the teachers are amazing.

I can only comment on class size as a teacher NOT in the Napa Valley, though I did go through NapaRead More schools K-12. Our district in Contra Costa County is a high school only 'union' district with around 7,000 students. We have three comprehensive high schools and two alternative programs. In the eight years I taught at two of the comprehensive sites, I feel the best years for me as a teacher and the students as well, students, were the years I had low student numbers. One year I had a total of 107 students at the end of the year. Many of my colleagues had class totals of over 150. With just over 100 students, I was able to engage the students more and they were able to engage me more as a professional. It helped that they were a particularly mature group of 10th graders, 15, going on 16. I have seen a number of this group in the community since theyleft me and many of them report that it was one of the best classes, because it was relatively small. The next year I got slammed with over 180 students. You do the math.

My son came from a private school education K-8 to Napa High this year. While the numbers might seemRead More daunting, I could not ask for a more quality education than the one my son is receiving at Napa High School. Dedicated teachers who meet his commitment equally. We chose not to attend the local private high school in town, as we wanted out son to learn to be successful in a large enviroment, and he is doing just that. Napa High School may have on average larger class size, but this parent could not ask for a better spot for our son to develop into the student he wants to be. There is an amazing education to be had at Napa High School. My son is an active participant in his education. Has developed good communication with his teachers who are interested in him being successful. That's what it is all about. Small class size does not guarantee a quality education.

MICHAEL P WILSON "Independent Kid" Michael I missed your earlier comment on 3:33 pm onRead More Tuesday, March 19, 2013 Joy I think that shooting happend on Imola in the Mid 1990s It was a NSIB raid on a bunch of Drug Dealing punks A bunch of Drug Dealing punks!! Now here you go spouting out statements that are not true. 1. The reason the NSIB were at the location, was to serve a warrant on the women that lived at the apartment. Raymond and Willie did not live there!! 2. They held the warrant for 10 Days!! (no reason given for waiting so long) 3. The warrant was to be served on the apartment!! Not in the parking lot!! My step-son and Willie did not live at the apartment!! They were in Willie's truck when the cops pulled up. Why did the cops not pull in behind Willie's truck? (Unknown). 4. Willie did have drugs on him, but where was the warrant to search him or his truck? Why did the cop drop his gun inside of Willie's truck? Why did the cop have to shoot Raymond in the head? He had no weapon or drugs.

Here is another article about UC coaches salaries.Read More http://www.ocregister.com/articles/coaches-316441-nobel-laureates.html "The top UC coaches earn, on average, three times more than the system’s full-time Nobel laureates. The top eight coaches earned an average of $1.2 million in 2010, while UC’s eight full-time laureates earned an average of $403,000." http://www.dickmeister.com/id117.html "Hard times continue at the University of California - except, of course, for UC's very well cared for administrators. Their six-figure salaries continue to grow handsomely while the pay of those who teach and do most of the university's other work remains stagnant, and even as student tuition and fees increase and qualified students are being turned away." I am not sure when government jobs began earning at the same level as private industry jobs. The difference in pay use to be justified by the better retirement and benefit package. Now it seems they get a private industry salary and all the other perks that go with a tax payer subsidized job. At the very bottom of the pyramid are the students. If we can't cut back salaries to increase classes and give students what they need then our system is failing.
Tina McMillan February 24, 2013 at 11:40 pm
Novato Native It is so frustrating to see kids work their tails off and then not have a clear trackRead More to a degree because too much money is going to top tier staff in the UC system. Here is a link to an article by the teachers union. http://www.cft.org/universities/394-uc-budget-qa.html "Possible Salary Reductions" "Q: Is it true that we are going to have our salaries reduced? A: It is very possible that the UC may decide to cut all salaries 5% or use a furlough system to accomplish the same thing. However, in the case of lecturers and librarians, the university has to negotiate any salary reduction. Q: If the UC is broke, why would the union resist a 5% salary reduction? A: We do not think the university is broke, and we want them to prove to us that they need to make these cuts. Q: Why do you think they are not broke? A: The university brings in billions of dollars every year in profits from medical services, extension programs, parking, housing, research, patents, and fund raising. They are just trying to maintain a high level of disposable income, while they claim they are poor. (see http://universityprobe.org/2009/04/budget-lies-a-letter-to-the-president-of-uc/)" I don't know who is telling the truth and who is lying I just know that kids that are a hairs breath away from a degree can no longer get classes in impacted schools. I thought the JC path was a way to insure success but it looks like that is broken too.

I don't get it...It just doesn't add up! How does eliminating an "advanced math class (AlgebraRead More I)" encourage children to seek higher education and not just "settle" for a HS Diploma, if at all? Lowering the bar is a WASTE of plenty of brilliant minds out there. What will the "bored" children do in a math class that is too easy for them, since "Federal No Child Left Behind statues don't allow for dueling curriculum"? Pathetic!
