<p>Probate referees are independent officers of the court, appointed by the California State Controller. Their appraisal is required for probate, small estate petitions and conservatorship or guardianship cases. Probate referees can also help trustees by relieving them of potential conflicts of interest or liability for errors involving general trust valuations, distribution of trusts, sale of assets and tax filings.
