Napa Valley Loses to Davis in Cricket Competition

Napa Valley Cricket Club loses to old rival Davis CC in a close game.

By Andrew Healey

The Napa Valley Cricket Club couldn’t quite make it over the line in a close loss to the Davis CC on a deceptive wicket in Davis earlier this month.

Napa won the toss and batted first with some solid performances from Inderjeet Singh (56 runs) and Bijoy Ojha (32) but a dramatic middle order batting collapse saw Napa post a score of 158 at the end of their innings.

The Napa club weren’t helped in their cause by tight bowling from Davis’s bowlers who bowled good lines all day with the best performances being Andy (3 wickets for 11 runs), Saheb (2/18) and Zuber (2/15).

After lunch, it was Davis’s turn to bat with three batsmen making the bulk of the runs including a solid 51 from Gihan. The other standouts were Zuber (24) and a late innings flourish from Avdesh (30).

Standout bowling efforts from Napa were Singh (4 for 24) and New Zealander, Martin Mackenzie (4 for 32) which included a great reflex caught and bowled. In the end Davis, fast running out of batsmen due to Napa’s great bowling, were able to hang on and make the target in the 27th over with just 2 wickets remaining.

“Our boys bowled extremely well and we were disappointed not to win against one of our traditional, and oldest, rivals," said Napa Club Captain Tim Irwin.  "We thought it was going to be a difficult target to defend but when we had Davis 9 for 116, we knew were in with a real chance.

"We just couldn’t dislodge their last couple of batsmen and ultimately that was the difference,” he added.

Davis Club Captain Dan Sahade had his own reaction.

“We’ve been playing the boys from Napa for four years now and we’ve seen their club grow to what it is today," Sahade said. "Full credit to them for doing an excellent job in getting established and we look forward to many more years of fun, competitive games against them”

The traditional Napa Clos du Val “Man of the Match” award was given to Davis’s Gihan for his excellent batting performance of 51 runs off 47 balls.
