Napa Bike Fest is Coming Saturday!

Daylong celebration of cycling set for April 27.

The second annual “Napa Bike Fest” (http://www.napabikefest.org) is happening on Saturday, April 27 at 500 First St., at the Oxbow Public Market south parking lot.

Organizers Napa Bike (a.k.a. Napa County Bicycle Coalition) said Bike Fest features a bike swap, KIDical Mass, BMX stunt show, four types of rides (including a ride with mountain bike icon Joe Breeze), great food and live music from Napa musicians.

Sponsors include: Kaiser Permanente, Google Map Maker, BottleRock, Sierra Nevada, Clif Family Winery, Gott’s Roadside, Rabobank, and The Hub Bicycles.

“We are truly honored to have such a significant group of organizations, each of which bring a unique element to the event”, stated Mike Costanzo, Executive Director of Napa Bike. “Kaiser Permanente and their dedication to improving the health and well-being of clients and employees through active lifestyle, couldn’t be a more perfect match for us, and we thank them publicly for their investment in Napa Bike and Bike Fest.”

Napa Bike, which in the past year fostered a series of advances in cycling safety, such as the approved “Fix Whitehall Lane” campaign, the installed “sharrows” on Streets in Napa, and the widening of ‘lineal pothole’ repairs to include pavement used by cyclists, is keen to engage the entire community during their one day event.

“Our goal at Bike Fest is to increase our membership and we hope that through this day of celebration, the community will get a better understanding of how our work improves the lives of people who want to ride bikes in Napa Valley,” said Joel King, Napa Bike president

Beginning at 8 a.m. and ending a 5 p.m., here is what one can expect to find, and experience at Bike Fest:

  • Music: all day long from noted Napa PorchFest musicians.
  • Food and Beverages: from some of Napa’s best purveyors of mobile munching pleasure; complemented by beverages from Sierra Nevada Brewery and local vintners.
  • Bike Stunts & Contests: BMX Jump2Jump Stunt Show, a Track Stand contest, and the ever-famous Tricycle Obstacle Course. One will be in awe when watching the tremendous bike handling skills of pros, gifted amateurs, and fun-loving kids.
  • Bike Swap: the Bike Swap is worth the downtown trip alone. For some it is a special opportunity to buy a renovated bicycle inexpensively and get riding on the same day; for others, it is a valid reason to clean out the garage of unwanted bike parts and bikes, and put some green in back in the pocket. All kinds of bikes welcome: old/new/road/vintage/bmx/mtb/fixed/retro.
  • Bike Rides – there are four Bike Rides; three for adults and one specific to children (Helmets are required to participate in any of the rides.) Each bike ride will begin with a brief introduction about the coalition’s BE BRIGHT campaign to improve cyclists and motorists mutual awareness and respect on the roads.

      1. Road Ride:  an out and back ride through the Carneros region; the $45 ride package includes support, a rest stop and visit at Bouchaine Vineyards, a water bottle, and lunch upon return.

      2. Tour de Skyline Mountain Bike Ride: For those who prefer a “fat tire” ride, an out and back mountain bike ride to Skyline Park led by mountain biking legend Joe Breeze; the $25 ride package includes entry into the park, a water bottle, and lunch.

       3. Historic Napa Heritage Ride. This ride is a cruiser-bike friendly ride through downtown Napa. Bill Tuikka from Napa County Landmarks will guide riders as he shares stories about many of Napa’s historical buildings. The cost is $10 (free to Napa Bike members).

      4. KIDical Mass. KIDical Mass is a fun-comes-first bike ride for kids and their families to learn about safe cycling. KIDical Mass is designed to educate bike-curious parents about safe bicycling with children, teach kids to ride safely, encourage biking to school, and to increase the visibility of families biking on Napa streets. Kids will have fun decorating their bikes before the ride, then enjoy a ride across town with their parents, and be rewarded with healthy snacks in the bargain. This ride is free to the first 90 kids who sign up.
