Total Recall: To Remake or Not to Remake?

Total Recall 2012.

Why remake a movie that is only 22 years old when the original was a big hit? A violent, bloody hit, but a hit all the same. Director Paul Verhoeven specialized in  bloody and violent over the top productions and went on to make Starship Troopers and a somewhat notorious film set in San Francisco - Basic Instinct.

One interesting thing is this is the second remake in a year that Colin Farrell has starred in, the previous movie, Fright Night, made much more sense as a remake than this one does, at least on the surface. The original was an entertaining, low budget, horror/comedy film that was not too well known but had a cult following. Total Recall was not a cult film, just the opposite, it was a very expensive, big budget, designed to be a hit production.

Why so many remakes in the first place is another question when there are thousands of unmade original scripts that the studios have already paid for and are owned by the studios.

At least Colin Farrel is a way better actor than Arnold Schwarzenegger ever was or could be so this one has that in it's favor.

Just the latest of Phillip K. Dick's work to be used as source material for a science fiction movie.
