Best Films By Decade: 1990s

Best movies of the 1990s.

My picks for best films of the decade leading up to the Napa Valley Film Festival and the opening of the new Century Theater. This is the 1990s edition, limited to 20, some with notes.

JFK (Must be seen on the big screen to be appreciated. Brilliant cinematography, editing and sound in this political detective story.)

Short Cuts (Large ensemble cast star in a handful of Raymond Carver short stories set in Southern California and directed by Robert Altman.)

L.A. Confidential

The Big Lebowski (Dude.)

The Game

Secrets and Lies (Wonderful English film about race and class.)

Groundhog Day

The Insider (This true story is better than fiction.)

Schindler’s List

Miller’s Crossing (Cohen brothers modern take on the classic gangster film with hard boiled dialogue.)

The Usual Suspects

The Remains Of The Day

As Good As It Gets

Out Of Sight (Jennifer Lopez and George Clooney have unbelievably fantastic chemistry in this witty tale of cops and bank robbers. )

Eyes Wide Shut

King Of The Hill (Wonderful coming of age movie set in the depression.)

True, "The Usual Suspects" is great, but once you've seen the ending it never has the same suspense. I was blown away the first time I watched it, second time not so much. I could watch "Shawshank" any time, for me it never looses it's appeal. The anticipation of Andy's freedom while watching him deal with everything is the draw. One particular movie from 1996 that had a lasting effect on me was "The English Patient". The lustful sexual chemistry between Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche supported an excellent story. The cave drawings of swimmers in the desert actually exist and have puzzled archeologists for years.

I like Shawshank also. I do think Lopez and Clooney are great in the movie and that's it's a weird and funny story. Make a list of your favorites from the 90s.

If you like The English Patient you should try The Unbearable Lightness Of Being which should have been on my 80s list.

Pulp fiction - Silence of the lambs - Reservoir dogs - Fargo - Forrest Gump - Unforgiven - Dead man walking - Saving private Ryan - Heat - A few good men - American beauty - Seven - That's about all I can come up with ......

Unforgiven and Heat almost made my list but I kept it to 20 and they got pushed off. I like all the movies you listed. Should be able to see Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction in early December at the new theater for one night only if you didn't see them on the big screen the first time or if you want to see them on it again. http://www.cinemark.com/movies.aspx?flag=NCM
