The course covers techniques for teaching adults to read and write. Also, it includes specific strategies for helping learners reach their personal goals, such as: reading to their children; passing the GED; completing job applications and understanding the notes that come home from school and the doctor’s office.

.
The Literacy Center has been offering tutoring since 1984. It is a second chance to adults who fell through the cracks and never gained the reading and writing skills necessary to live fully empowered lives.

The center also provides English as a Second Language instruction for adults who seek to improve their English skills. The program’s tutors are volunteers, many of whom have discovered that they learn as much as they teach when they become tutors.

“Tutoring changed a life...mine,” said Georgia Yssesltein, a volunteer in library literacy programs for many years.  “I meet people I would have never met otherwise, and am learning so much about the whole learning process. I love to be part of those light bulb moments!”
