Teachers, parents and civic leaders are reading beloved children's books by Dr. Seuss and other authors to schoolchildren around the Bay Area today as part of a national "Read Across America" celebration.

The 17th annual event, organized by the National Education Association, is sponsored in California by the NEA's Burlingame-based affiliate, the California Teachers Association.

"Reading skills last a lifetime and are the foundation of all learning," said CTA President Dean Vogel, who is scheduled to read to first graders at Suisun Elementary School in Suisun City this afternoon.

Vogel will be reading "The Day the Crayons Quit" by Drew Daywalt.

Each year, "Read Across America" occurs on or near the March 2 birthday of Dr. Seuss, whose real name was Theodor Seuss Geisel and whose classic children's books include "The Cat in the Hat," "Green Eggs and Ham," and "How the Grinch Stole Christmas."

In Alameda, Bay Farm Elementary School held a "Seussical Birthday Bash" this morning, featuring green eggs and ham for kindergarteners and readings by older students and school district officials.

In San Francisco, Police Chief Greg Suhr, Fire Chief Joanne Hayes-White and school district Superintendent Richard Carranza are among 50 volunteer readers at a daylong event at Sunset Elementary School.

University Park Elementary School in Salinas is hosting a full week of literacy events and has invited parents and city officials to join teachers in reading to students. In Santa Rosa, retired teachers are going to back to school to read at three Bellevue School District elementary schools.

Other Bay Area cities where schools are participating in the celebration include Fairfield, Pleasanton, San Jose and San Ramon.
