"Now is the time to get involved and stay involved as co-creators of strong public schools," writes Debbie Alter-Starr of Yountville. A forum for parents and teens takes place tonight from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Napa High School and dinner is

Dear Editor,

This letter is especially for parents with children attending Napa Valley Unified School District (NVUSD) schools. NVUSD will hold a community forum for parents and teens on Tuesday, October 9th, from 5:30pm – 9:00pm at Napa High School.  Whether our children are kindergarteners, or in 7th or 10th grade, whether we live in American Canyon, Yountville, or Napa, at this community conversation our voices will be heard.

I am a parent on the Sponsoring Committee for this forum and my husband and I and one of our teens will attend it.

The forum will start with free, dinner for the entire family from 5:30pm-6:30pm.  At 6:30pm, younger children will attend child care and the parent and teen dialogs will begin.   Most of the evening will be spent in small group discussions,  in English or Spanish.

The topics to be discussed are: 1) How to prepare  students for college and work in the 21st century; 2) Parent and community involvement in schools  3) Respectful and compassionate schools.

NVUSD Superintendents, trustees, and principals and teachers will be there to listen and record our feedback on “what’s working” and “what can be improved.”    All ideas recorded will distilled into top parent and teen priorities and presented back to us at a second forum on December 11th at which time we will discuss what action steps to take.

Please spread the word. Now is the time to get involved and stay involved as co-creators of strong public schools.

Sincerely,
Debbie Alter –Starr
