Seventeen wiggly but well-behaved second-graders from St. John the Baptist Catholic School tried out some new foods Monday in a special nutrition lesson from Michael Powell, the chef at Tarla Mediterranean Grill.
The kids walked to the First Street restaurant from their school at Main and Napa streets for the cooking demonstration. They were shepherded by St. John's principal Nancy Jordan and their teacher Breanna Topal, who owns Tarla with her husband Yusuf.
"Do you know how old I was when I decided I was going to be a chef?" Powell asked the mostly-7-year-old group.
"Seven," he told them.
The children watched and occasionally raised their hands to answer Powell's questions as he showed them how he makes hummus and zucchini cakes.
Healthy eating is "very important," Powell told his young guests. "It makes you feel good for the rest of your life.
After the second-graders, their teacher and principal and Napa Valley Patch all had a chance to sample Powell's cuisine, he made sure to shake each child's hand before saying goodbye.
