Jazz Violin, Rancho Gordo Party Top Weekend Events

Regina Carter's Reverse Thread plays the Opera House, "Gentleman" cook David Harap dishes at Rancho Gordo and hoopers light up the night at Veterans Park this weekend. What's your pleasure?

Here's a warm welcome to this three-day weekend! We're due for one, and it's starting out with flair:

At 6 p.m. Friday in Veterans Memorial Park, it's Light up the Night with the Napa Hoopers - LED Hula Hoop Jam. Be there and be dazzled, for free! And if you feel like taking part, the hoopers will welcome you. (They also twirl Saturday afternoons in Fuller Park.)

Speaking of dazzled, anyone who loves jazz and African music should give serious consideration to the fact that there are no bad seats at the Napa Valley Opera House, where reigning jazz violinist Regina Carter performs at 8 p.m. Friday with her band, Reverse Thread. For a taste of what no serious fan of improvised music should miss, check out the video accompanying this story.
Tickets are $25.

Saturday morning (weather permitting), get out on the water with the Kayak NV crew on their Presidents' Paddle"Ask about our locals rate." Hmmm! Info: 707-501-8585, paddle@kayaknv.com.

At 3 p.m. Saturday, the ever-hospitable Steve Sando of Rancho Gordo hosts a Book Party + Art Show at his Yajome Street HQ. The free event is a chance to meet David Harap, author of Entertain Like a Gentleman and Entertain Like a Texas Gentleman, who will sign books and serve some of his signature dishes. The art show comes from the fifth-grade class of Blue Oak School, who "designed their perfect bean," Steve says. A local winery will pour.

Sunday, why not take a trip up to Yountville for a visit to the Napa Valley Museum's new Mozart exhibition?

And if you're among the lucky ones with a Monday holiday—assuming you're of drinking age—the folks at the Trinitas Cellars Tasting Room, located in the Estate Cave behind The Meritage Resort and Spa, invite you to stop by from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. for a complimentary sampling of their 2010 Carneros chardonnay and a 10 percent discount on 2010 chardonnay purchases, through Feb. 26.
