Healdsburg Boys Take St. Helena Hoops Tourney

The Healdsburg Boys Hounds win championship game of St. Helena tourney 64-53.

From Healdsburg Patch:

The Healdsburg High School boys varsity basketball team topped St. Bernard's High School of Eureka Saturday in the championship match of the Sutter Home Basketball Tournament in St. Helena.

The Greyhounds, playing in their first three games of the season, took Eureka 64-53 in the winning match Saturday at St. Helena High School.

Earlier in the tournament, the Hounds topped Middletown 34-54 in the first round and Willits 49-64 in the semi-finals.

"All three of our wins were very convincing," said Head Coach Nick Galvan, who is in his first season for the Greyhounds after transferring from Montgomery High School. "It gave the team a lot of confidence and it showed us where we stand and where we need to go.

"We are very motivated," Galvan said.

Seniors Sam Walker (avg .12ppg), Arnold Silva (avg. 12ppg) and Cameron Lutz (avg. 18ppg) led the team in scoring effort.

Lutz, a flank guard, won tournament MVP and Silva, a center, was selected for the all-tournament team, Galvan said.

"We worked really hard in the pre-season," Galvan said when asked what led to the wins. "I tried to create a really competitive atmosphere in the practices."

He said the team worked well together and "played well as a team," he said. "They were unselfish and we had no one person scoring all the time."

Galvan said his team of five seniors, five juniors and one freshman have 23 more games in the season yet to play. The tourney win will have an impact at the end of the season as to whether they can get in the playoffs, Galvan said.

"One of the qualifications to get into the playoffs is to do well against your competitors in the same division," he said.

The Greyhounds are in Division 4 of the North Coast Section. The St. Helena tournament was among members of both Division 4 and Division 5 of the NCS.

"A lot of people are really excited about the win," Galvan said. "I hope this will bring more people out to the games."
