Pet of the Week: Sherlock the Basset-Lab

Another lovable mixed-breed available for adoption at the Napa County Animal Shelter.

Arthur Conan Doyle's detective hero Sherlock Holmes once said “when you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth,”

I had to employ this rule when I met Sherlock, our pet of the week at the Napa County Animal Shelter.

Yellow, short hair, big head, with a long non-stop tail like a Labrador Retriever, but not a Lab. Stout, short legs and sniffing everything like a Basset Hound, but not a Basset.

Elementary! A Basset-Lab mix.

That's Sherlock – a two-year-old neutered male. Not the gigantic "Hound of the Baskervilles," but a playful and very friendly dog with a wagging tail that just won’t quit.

Sherlock is clean, calm, likes kids, dogs, rides in the car and is very playful. I noted that in spite of the nonstop barking from the other canine residents at the shelter, Sherlock did not make a sound.

“Yeah, he’s pretty quiet” said shelter staffer Tyler Smith.

As with all animals available from the Shelter, Sherlock is up to date with all his vaccinations and has been micro-chipped so he can be reunited with his new owner should he decide to go bounding across the moors.

The shelter has many other dogs, cats, rabbits, and this week a couple of goats available for adoption into good homes. Stop by the shelter at 942 Hartle Court six days a week, from noon till 4:45 p.m. For more information, call (707) 253-4381.
