Napa County Appoints Arts Committee of 10

The Napa County Arts and Culture Advisory Committee is a 10-member group, representing the county's five cities and five supervisorial districts, that advises the county on distributing grant funding for the arts.

Ten Napa Valley residents were sworn in last week to a new cultural advisory commission that will advise county government on how to award grant money for the arts.

The county regularly allocates part of the proceeds from the hotel tariff known as the Transient Occupancy Tax to groups promoting tourism, the arts and open space.

The new Napa County Arts and Culture Advisory Committee replaces an earlier body called the Napa Commission on Arts & Culture.

The previous commission fell afoul of county supervisors last year after Napa Valley Patch investigated its activities, reporting that the group was seeking to set up a nonprofit foundation that would directly compete with Arts Council Napa Valley, long the county's lead arts partner.

The new group's name represents its advisory role in county government. Each member will seve a three-year term, although as all the members were sworn in this month, the actual dates when their terms end will need to be staggered and have not yet been determined.

The Arts and Culture Advisory Committee shall develop grant eligibility criteria, application process and forms and appropriately advertise and call for grant proposals, hold grant training workshops, develop scoring criteria and guidelines for evaluating grant applications and make recommendations to the Director of Housing and Intergovernmental Affairs regarding grant awards to non-profit art and cultural organizations in Napa County on an annual or as needed basis.
