Napa County, Boys & Girls Clubs Offer Meals, Snacks to Low-Income Kids

Summer program available at sites in Napa, St. Helena and Calistoga.

Hundreds of children in Napa will get meals and snacks this summer, thanks to a partnership between the Napa County Health & Human Services Agency  and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Napa Valley.

“In Napa County, low-income children are eligible to receive at least one nutritious meal daily while attending school,” said Mitch Wippern, HHSA deputy director. “During the summer, many children are at risk to go hungry or to have a less-than nutritious diet. This program is intended to alleviate some of that pressure on families and we’re happy to be a part of it.”

The Boys & Girls Clubs is the sponsoring agency for two meal sites in Napa this summer, one at the BGC Clubhouse at 1515 Pueblo Ave, near Napa High, and the other at Napa Valley Language Academy, 2700 Kilburn Ave.

BGC contracted with HHSA to prepare the meals at the Agency’s kitchen facilities on the Old Sonoma Road campus and deliver them to the sites.

“You don’t have to be a member of the Boys & Girls Clubs to be eligible to join us for meals, but we would prefer it if families opt to become members," said Anya Elidi-Stubbs, area director for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Napa Valley. "We have scholarships to help residents become members, which in turn help us to offer more targeted programming and take advantage of federal and State programs.”

The program requires that meals follow a specified plan that includes milk, fruits, vegetables or juice; grain products (cereal, muffins, etc.); and meat or meat alternate (ground turkey, eggs, cheese, beans, etc.).

The Pueblo Avenue site offers lunch from noon to 1 p.m. and a snack from 3 to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, until Aug. 9. Both BGC members and non-members are invited to access the program at the Pueblo site.

The agencies expect to serve 230 children each day.

Other Summer Food Service Program sites in Napa County include Harvest Middle School, McPherson Elementary, St. Helena Primary School in St. Helena, and Calistoga Elementary School and Calistoga Junior Senior High School,
