Motorist Dies in Accident on Napa Road

Two cars were involved in an accident just outside the city of Sonoma limits.

Update Monday night: SFGate reports the victim was an 82-year-old man. His identification is withheld until family have been notified.

Napa Road was shut down east of the city of Sonoma this afternoon because of a fatal crash, a California Highway Patrol officer said.

The crash was reported at 11:46 a.m. on Napa Road at Burnale Road, near the Napa County line.

Initial reports indicated that the crash involved a gray Volvo SUV and a white Toyota Corolla, CHP Officer Kevin Bartlett said.

One person was pronounced dead at the scene, he said.

The circumstances of the collision remain under investigation.

The road was re-opened to traffic, one lane at a time, by 1 p.m., according to a witness.

Bay City New Service contributed to this report.

Michael, from our view (and we had a bird's-eye one) the car pulled out right in front on the car that was headed down the highway. Unfortunate. The Volvo driving along Napa Rd. was driving at an appropriate speed, but had no way to avoid the driver who had pulled right out in front of him. I don't think he even had time to brake.

Yes Maureen First off sorry you had to see that. Yes the SF gate tells the same.

Michael, yep, just so sad. I'm not sure why he chose to pull out right in front of the Volvo, but it just makes me sad. Sad for who he could have left behind. Such a strange dichotomy that in this beautiful area, we could witness such a horrific scene.

I apoligize. I was a little hasty to judge your comment. He married my husband and I. I'm just sad that he's home.
