Techel Keeps Napa Mayor's Seat

“It’s a lot of hard work to run a campaign. And it all comes to an end in one night. I think I finally got my life back about three days ago,” Napa Mayor Jill Techel said after early election returns indicating voters have returned her to office.

Voters want Jill Techel to be Napa mayor for another four years.

When the first mail-in ballots results were announced at 8:02 p.m. Tuesday, Techel was leading her opponent, city councilman Peter Mott.

As subsequent unofficial results were tallied, Techel's lead was confirmed: As of the final unofficial results released at 11:29 p.m., she had received more than 60 percent of the vote to Mott's slightly less than 40 percent: Please see Last Election Night Results Favor Incumbents.

Techel, with her friends, family and supporters, celebrated at Gordon Huether Gallery on First Street in downtown Napa.

“It’s a lot of hard work to run a campaign. And it all comes to an end in one night. I think I finally got my life back about three days ago,” Techel said. “It’s exciting, but I am also nervous, what candidate wouldn’t be?”

Techel’s children, Eric and Kristen, were by their mother’s side to cheer her on.

“I’m so impressed with her. She has so much energy. I couldn’t be prouder of her,” Kristen said.

Her brother agreed.

“Mom has done an amazing job for Napa since she has been on the city council and her eight years as mayor,” Eric Techel said. “She has been so busy with the campaign, but always made time for her children and grandchildren.”

Sipping wine and munching on food goodies, the crowd mingle throughout the gallery, carefully slipping by the the expensive pieces of art.

Napa restauranteur Greg Cole brought the family’s high school exchange student to see American government in action.

Laura Bettini, of Venice, Italy, was taking it all in.

“Our elections are much different than what she has seen in Italy. For one thing, they don’t have drive through places for voters to drop off their ballots,” Cole said.

Bettini agreed. “It was all very exciting and seeing another form of government.”
