9/11 Memorial Brings Twin Towers Steel to Napa
A media release from the City of Napa invites the community to the project's kickoff on Saturday.
This Saturday, May 21, steel from the Twin Towers will arrive in Napa after a cross-country shipment from New York - steel that will be used in the Napa 9/11 Memorial to be constructed downtown.
The community is invited to the official project kickoff, a free event featuring music, food and drink and the opportunity to view the World Trade Center steel up close. The event will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Gordon Huether Studio, 1821 Monticello Road.
Steel from the World Trade Center was offered by the Port Authority of New York-New Jersey to communities around the world to use in commemorating the events of September 11, 2001. Built from this recovered steel with added glass panels, the Napa 9/11 Memorial will be a striking assemblage on a site adjacent to Main Street at Napa Creek. Landscaping, seating and lighting will help to create a park-like environment open to the public. A groundbreaking ceremony is planned for September 11, 2011, with a goal of completion in the spring of 2012.
