Firefighters are working through the night to battle a vegetation fire in Butts Canyon, just west of Lake Berryessa that has rapidly spread to 2,700 acres and led to the evacuation of hundreds of homes in the Pope Valley area, Cal Fire said.
Cal Fire spokesman Daniel Berlant said the fire was 30 percent contained as of 10 p.m. and that fire crews are building containment lines through the night.
Evacuations are in effect for residents in the 180 homes of the Berryessa Estates subdivision as well as on Snell Valley Road to the Lake County line, Cal Fire spokeswoman Stacie McCambridge said this evening.
Evacuees are going to the Pope Valley School in Pope Valley and the Middletown High School in Lake County, McCambridge said.
At least five structures have been damaged since the fire started around 12:08 p.m. today in the 7800 block of Butts Canyon Road, McCambridge said.
Butts Valley, Snell Valley and Aetna Springs roads are closed. The fire jumped Butts Canyon and Snell Valley roads, McCambridge said.
Firefighters from around the area are assisting, including those from the City of Napa, St. Helena and the Lake County and Napa County fire departments, the California Highway Patrol and the Napa County Sheriff's Office.
Tony Sarto, a park aide at Bothe-Napa Valley State Park, located about 5 miles north of St. Helena and at least 7 miles south of where the 2,700-acre fire is burning, said that from the park he could see smoke billowing up above the hills late this evening.
"It looks like a volcano erupted," Sarto said.
Sarto said he saw a large cloud of smoke pushing up over the hills as he drove to the park from Santa Rosa this afternoon.
Sarto said that while the fire is certainly significant, Bothe-Napa is not in the danger zone and that their operations are not interrupted.
While firefighters are battling the blaze overnight, many campers are spending the night at the Bothe-Napa campgrounds and are even permitted to have campfires in designated areas.
Sarto said that while the park remains on high alert as firefighters work to stop the fire from spreading to more land, the park staff is preparing for the upcoming Fourth of July holiday weekend, and therefore no park rangers were scheduled to work until the park reopens at 8 a.m. on Wednesday.

A 300-acre vegetation fire in the Pope Valley area of Napa County has prompted mandatory evacuations, a Cal Fire spokeswoman said.
The rapidly burning, uncontained fire east of Calistoga and St. Helena started at 12:08 p.m. and mandatory evacuations have been ordered from the west side of the 7800 block of Butts Canyon Road to north of Snell Valley Road, Cal Fire spokeswoman Karen Stasko said.
Residents are being asked to go to Pope Valley School.
Five structures have been threatened but have not been reported as burned, Stasko said at about 2 p.m.
Butts Canyon Road is closed between Snell Valley and Aetna Springs roads.
The Lake and Napa County fire departments, the California Highway Patrol and the Napa County Sheriff's Office have also responded to the blaze.

Butts Canyon Road is closed between Snell Valley and Aetna Springs roads.
