Shifting Cargo of Wine Toppled Truck on Highway, Police Say

There was wine, diesel and oil on the roadway after a big-rig hauling cases of wine tipped over just south of the Sonoma Highway intersection Wednesday afternoon. Here's the official police report.

A truckdriver from Modesto was hospitalized Wednesday afternoon after his on Highway 29 not far south of the intersection with Sonoma Highway/State Route 121, according to a shift activity log released a few hours later by the :

On 11-16-2011 at about 1246 hours, Napa Police were dispatched to a possible major injury accident in the area of southbound State Highway 29 at Highway 121. 

Upon officers' arrival, they determined it was a solo vehicle accident with minor injuries.

A tractor-trailer rig was travelling from the City of Sonoma with an unknown amount of cased wine unsecured in the trailer. 

The tractor trailer was turning southbound onto Highway 29 from east bound Highway 121 and the unsecured load shifted inside the trailer.

This caused the trailer and cab to roll onto its side and block southbound Highway 29. There were no other vehicles involved.

The cargo caused a hazardous material spill. The southbound lanes of Highway 29 were closed for cleanup. 

The driver of the big rig was transported to QVH ER for complaint of pain. The highway was re-opened at 1550 hours. 

The cargo’s value is not known at this time.

The driver was identified as Broderick Huggins, 31, of Modesto, police said.
