UPDATE: Semi-Truck Nips SUV at Yountville Intersection

Traffic diverted into one lane.

UPDATE: 2:15 p.m. Wednesday, July 10, 2013.

The back end of a semi-truck crashed into the front end of a stopped SUV this morning at the intersection of Washington and California Drive in Yountville.

Napa County Sheriff's Deputy Cal Valente said the incident occurred just after 11 a.m. as the semi-truck was trying to navigate a left turn off of California Drive into a detoured northbound lane of Washington Street.

Because of road work and a coned area, flaggers were detouring northbound traffic into a southbound lane, which was too tight a turn for the semi, Valente said.

"The front end of the semi made it, but the back end didn't," he said. Instead, the back end of the semi=truck struck the front fender of the SUV, which was stopped in the right hand turn lane, waiting to turn onto California Drive.

Valente said a flagger told him that he was trying to back up the cars so that the semi-truck could proceed. However, Valente said it was unclear why the  semi-truck driver was not told to wait until the cars had backed up.

Valente said it appeared to be a miscommunication and he did not expect to issue any citations.

No one was injured in the crash, Valente said. The driver of the SUV was a local resident and called a friend to be picked up. The SUV was a rental car, Valente said, and it was towed off. The driver of the semi-truck, which was not damaged, was from out of town.

The area was coned because workers were putting in asphalt impressions on the crosswalk at the intersection, Valente said.

ORIGINAL STORY: 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 10, 2013.
Napa County Sheriff's Office is investigating what caused a black SUV to crash this morning in the southbound lane of Washington Street in Yountville at the intersection with California Street.

Deputies were interviewing workers from Cal Safety Inc. Equipment Contractors this morning about the accident, which appears to have occurred around 11:30 a.m.

Workers were diverting traffic around the damaged vehicle onto one lane at the busy intersection, which is aturn-off for on and off ramps for Highway 29, as well as the access route to Veteran's home of California in Yountville.

There was no immediate word on what caused the crash or whether anyone was injured. Sherriff's deputies were not immediately available to comment.
