Purple Heart Awarded to Son of Napa Police Records Staffer

Napa Police recognize U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Jay Gehres.

A Purple Heart was awarded over the weekend to U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Jay Gehres, son of Napa Police Records Division 12-year staff member Chris Hannah.

Gehres was issued a Purple Heart in a military ceremony in Mountain View on Saturday.

On Dec. 29, 2011, Gehres was deployed in Afghanistan. While on a mission, his Humvee was struck by an Improvised Explosive Device.  As a result of the IED, Gehres suffered major injuries.

Gehres recovered from his injuries and remained in theater.  Three months later, in March 2012, while still in Afghanistan, his vehicle was once again struck by an IED.

Despite his injuries, Gehres continues to serve in the Army Reserves.
