An elderly Napa man who was killed Friday morning when his electric wheelchair collided with a food delivery truck might have had a hearing impairment, a police captain said.

The victim, identified as 88-year-old Dean Goff, might not have heard the truck's engine when he pulled in front of the truck, Capt. Jeff Troendly said.

Police said Lyle Albert Salez, 49, of Santa Rosa, had just delivered groceries to the Red Rock Café at 1010 Lincoln Ave. in Napa when he turned left out of the parking lot onto northbound Main Street around 10 a.m.

Goff had just driven through the Red Rock Café parking lot in his electric wheelchair close to the passenger side of the Fresh and Frozen Foods Inc. delivery truck out of Rohnert Park, Troendly said.

As the truck pulled forward onto Main Street, Goff drove his wheelchair in front of the truck, Troendly said.

Goff suffered major injuries when he was struck and died at the scene, Troendly said.

Salez did not show any signs of impairment from drugs or alcohol, and the collision is under investigation, Troendly said.
