The California Highway Patrol said the woman, whose name has not been released pending notification of next of kin, was in the north lane of Silverado Trail north of Trancas Street when she was struck by 16-year-old James Paul Kinda, of Napa.

Police say that Kinda was driving north on the Trail in a 2004 GMC Yukon XL when he hit the woman. The impact caused the woman, whom police said was wearing dark-colored clothing at the time of the accident, to come to rest in the south lanes of the Trail about 60 feet north from the initial impact location.

Kinda exited the Yukon to stop south traffic from hitting the woman, but left the vehicle in gear the CHP said. While he was attempting to help the woman, the Yukon went onto the west shoulder of Silverado Trail where it came to rest against a tree.

The woman sustained fatal injuries as a result of the accident; Kinda was not injured.

The CHP is investigating the cause of the wreck. The woman's name was not available as of the time of this posting pending notification of next of kin.
