Napa Sheriff: Berryessa Drowning Victim Identified

An autopsy on what would have been his 25th birthday is expected to confirm that drowning caused the death of Tani Tau at Lake Berryessa over the weekend, according to the Napa County Sheriff's Office.

A San Mateo man whose body was found a day after he disappeared while swimming at Lake Berryessa Saturday has been identified as Sitaniselao Juliest Beck Tau, according to Capt. Tracey Stuart of the Napa County Sheriff's Office, who said.

The name came from the DMV, Stuart said, but emails from friends and messages on Twitter indicate the victim was widely known as Tani Tau.

An autopsy Monday, which would have been his 25th birthday, was expected to confirm that he died by drowning after slipping beneath the surface of the lake Saturday afternoon.

"He was out with a group of people on a boat and went swimming," Stuart said. "He swam a distance from the boat and went under."

The body was found Sunday at about 4:40 p.m. in 30 feet of water not far from where he was last seen, Stuart said.
