Napa PD: Head Injury to Bicyclist Who Hit Car

After leaving the Safeway parking lot at Jefferson and Trancas, a 50-year old Napa resident ran into a southbound vehicle on Jefferson Street.

Shortly after noon today, at 12:15 p.m., Napa resident Jesus Cortez Castro, 50, was riding his bicycle east through the Safeway Shopping Center plaza located at Jefferson Street and Trancas Avenue. 

As he exited the parking lot onto Jefferson via the east driveway near Staples Office Supply, he rode his bicycle into the path of a southbound vehicle driven by Darlene Long, 65, also a Napa resident. 

Castro hit the left front corner of the vehicle, glanced off and landed on the roadway, sustaining sustained several lacerations to his head and abrasions to his shoulder and arms.  He was not wearing a bicycle helmet.

He was transported to  for emergency treatment and flown to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital for further treatment. Castro’s condition is unknown. Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the collision. 

Southbound Jefferson Street traffic in the area was shut down for about one hour while the Napa Police Department Accident Reconstruction Team investigated the collision. The exact cause of the collision is still under investigation.  Any witnesses are asked to call Officer Metz at 257-9223.
