Napa Firefighters Quickly Douse Small Fire at Homeless Encampment

No injuries or damage at fire Saturday night.

Napa Fire Department quickly extinguished a small fire Saturday at the Soscol Avenue bridge over the diversion channel near the flood control office, firefighters said.

Capt. Pat Walmsley of Napa Fire Department Station 1 said there were no injuries or damages in the fire, reported just before 7 p.m. Saturday.

Walmsley said smoke was coming from the flood control gates on either side of a closed-off tunnel. A homeless encampment lodged in the chaseway of the bridge inside the tunnel was the likely source of the fire and smoke, he said.

"Due to the hazardous nature of the tunnel, we've kept it closed off," Walmsley said.

He said the fire was doused "right away" by firefighters using one hoseline from a single fire engine.
