Napa Captain Takes Over Top Sonoma County CHP Position

Santa Rosa CHP commander placed on leave this month, officials confirm.

The California Highway Patrol captain in charge of the CHP's Santa Rosa office has been placed on a leave of absence, a CHP official has confirmed.

Capt. Greg Tracey has been replaced by Capt. Chris Childs from the Napa County CHP office, Diana McDermott, coordinator of the CHP's Golden Gate Division said this afternoon.

McDermott said state law prohibits her from talking about another employee and saying anything regarding an internal investigation of an employee.

Asked if Tracey was the target of a criminal investigation, McDermott said, "not that I'm aware of."

(The Press Democrat reported yesterday that an investigation was underway. Story here.)

"When the CHP becomes aware of any allegations, the department acts swiftly on them and does an appropriate investigation to its conclusion," McDermott said.

McDermott said she does not know how long Tracey will be on leave of absence.

"He's still an employee," she said.

Tracey was a sergeant in the California State Police when he transferred to the CHP in July 1995, McDermott said.

In October 1995 Tracey went to the Golden Gate Division and in May 1998 he went to the CHP's Marin office, McDermott said. He returned to the Golden Gate Division as a lieutenant in October 2001, transferred to the Santa Rosa office in January 2004 and as a captain went to the Golden Gate Communications Center in 2009, McDermott said.

Tracey was then transferred to the Santa Rosa office in 2010, McDermott said.

His leave of absence started earlier this month.
