Man Jailed on Gun Charge after Shots Reported

He said it was fireworks, but officers found spent ammunition and an illegally modified rifle, according to police. Arrest information does not indicate a conviction.

 

A 54-year-old Napa man was arrested Saturday afternoon on suspicion of having an illegally modified firearm after witnesses reported gunshots coming from his property on Big Ranch Road, according to a shift activity log released Sunday by the :

On 5-5-12, officers were dispatched to the report of shots heard in the area of the 2000 block of Big Ranch Road.

Witnesses reported seeing the resident, Stephen James Wellman, 2-12-58, Napa Resident, previously with a firearm and believed the shots were coming from his property.

Wellman was contacted at his residence, and denied firing off any guns, but stated it was firecrackers.

Spent ammunition was located near the front door of the residence. During a protective sweep of his residence, an illegally modified rifle was located in plain view.  

Wellman was booked at the , police said. Arrest information does not indicate a conviction.
