NAPA POLICE: Man Arrested for Trying to Help Another Avoid Arrest

Item from Napa Police Department Log from this week.

A 60-year-old Napa man and a 39-year-old Napa woman were arrested this week -- the woman on outstanding warrants, and the man on suspicion of trying to help her avoid arrest.

Deryl Edward Binstock and Lavetta Victoria Conley were taken into custody at about 6:30 p.m. Monday at Motel 6, 3380 Solano Avenue, Napa.

According to police, officers observed Binstock walking to his truck, which was parked in the Motel 6 parking lot on Solano Avenue. The officer knew Binstock from prior contacts and knows Binstock is on active probation with search and seizure terms out of Napa.

The officer contacted Binstock and conducted a search of his person. The officer located a key to one of the motel rooms at Motel 6. Binstock told the officer he was staying at the motel.

With this information, the officer proceeded to search the motel room, in accordance with the terms of Binstock’s probation. When the officer entered the motel room, he contacted another person, whom he recognized as Conley.

The officer knew that Conley had two warrants for her arrest. She was taken into custody. A search of the motel room was conducted and nothing was located.

Earlier in the week, officers had been to Conley’s residence in the 1400 block of Division Street in Napa to arrest Conley on the warrants. When officers knocked on the door, they could hear movement, but no one answered.

Officer attempted to make contact with the person inside the residence for approximately 90 minutes without success and the officers left.

Approximately 20 minutes later, one of the officers drove by Conley’s residence and saw Binstock’s pulling up to Conley’s residence. The officer contacted Binstock and asked him why he was there.

He could not answer the question. A search of his cell phone allegedly showed several text messages from “female Farrell.” Conley was recently married to a subject with the last name of Farrell.

The text messages read, "the police were at her residence and she needed a ride." Binstock had replied’ “I’ll be right there.”

When asked about the text messages, Binstock denied he was there to pick up Conley. Binstock was arrested at Motel 6 for being an accessory to the crime of helping Conley avoid arrest.

He was also arrested for committing a felony while out on bail, as well as violating his probation.

Binstock and Conley were booked into Napa County Department of Corrections.
