Highway 29 northbound has now reopened after this morning's fire on a gas tanker truck.

ORIGINAL STORY: 9:55 a.m. Monday, May 20, 2013.

Motorists are advised to avoid Hwy. 29 northbound this morning between Imola Avenue and Hwy. 121 due to a gasoline truck fire.

The fire began about 9:40 a.m. in a tire on the ARCO gas truck, witnesses said.  The truck, which was traveling northbound on Hwy. 29, was completely full of gasoline, witnesses said.

Napa City firefighters were able to extinguish the tire fire before it reached the gas tank, saving the truck, driver and the entire area from what could have been a huge blaze and major catastrophe.

Firefighters and police were working on a plan to off-load all the fuel from the truck before removing the vehicle from the roadway.

Napa Police are at the scene to and are sending out traffic alerts.
