A female student riding her bicycle to St. Helena High School escaped serious injury Tuesday morning after she was knocked from her bike by a hit-and-run driver pulling a U-turn on Highway 29, according to a media bulletin from the City of St. Helena Police Department.

The collision at around 7:30 a.m. was caused by a vehicle described as of an unknown type, possibly a gray Toyota, and an older model.

Police said the male driver, described as having dark hair and a black sweater, did a U-turn over both lanes of Highway 29 in front of the high school and struck the tire of the student's bicycle before continuing south on the highway.
