Grenade Found at Veterans Home in Yountville

Napa County Sheriff's deputies recovered and diffused an unexploded grenade at the Veterans Home of California in Yountville on Tuesday, said Sheriff's Capt. Tracey Stuart.

The grenade, which contained about 300 metal pellets, had apparently been in storage at the facility for many years until it was discovered during a move, she said.

Stuart said deputies responded to a 3:15 p.m. call Tuesday at the Home for a report of a found grenade.

"The object was found by Veterans Home staff, who found it inside a box that had recently been moved from storage to the Archive Room of the Member Services Building," Stuart said. "The building was evacuated and the Napa Sheriff’s Hazardous Devices Team responded."

Stuart said the object was "consistent with a cluster style bomb, used in larger munitions," she said.  "It contained approximately 300 metal pellets."

The Hazardous Devices Team was able to render the grenade "safe," Stuart added.   It is unknown who owned the box containing the device and is believed it has been in storage at the Veterans Home for many years.
