Friday's DUI Checkpoint Nets 3 Unlicensed, 2 Suspected Impaired Drivers - One With Gun

Napa County law enforcement' DUI and driver’s license checkpoint on Friday -- May 23 -- resulted in the arrests of two for suspected driving under the influence and three citations of motorists without valid licenses. 

Officers participated in AVOID the 9, which is a grant funded by OTS.

Nine Officers and one CSO worked this operation from 6 p.m. to 12 a.m. and 1,370 vehicles passed through the checkpoint which was in the 400 block of Soscol Avenue in Napa, police said.

Thirteen drivers were evaluated for driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and two were arrested for suspected DUI, police said.

Additionally, three motorists were driving with suspended licenses and their vehicles were towed and impounded for 30 days, police said.  

One of the alleged DUI drivers, John Tillman Smith, 51, of Napa, was also reportedly in possession of a handgun that was concealed under his clothing in his groin area, police said.  

Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
