Family of Andy Lopez Files Claims for Damages

A federal lawsuit could also be filed soon.

The family of the Santa Rosa teen shot and killed by a Sonoma County Sheriff's deputy has filed a claim for damages with the county.

According to KGO-7, the county has six months to accept or reject the claim, which says 13-year-old Andy Lopez was killed "unjustifiably" and charges the sheriff's department didn't properly train its deputies in the use of lethal force.

The Santa Rosa Press Democrat reported Andy's family also plans to file a federal lawsuit in the killing.

Meanwhile, the extent of an FBI-led investigation into the shooting has become less clear, the Press Democrat reports. Local law enforcement officials told that newspaper the FBI would only be offering support to the local investigation, while an FBI representative said the two inquiries would be separate.
