A Napa man was killed Wednesday evening when his car ran off Bennett Lane west of Calistoga and struck a tree, a California Highway Patrol officer said.

Napa County sheriff's Capt. Tracey Stuart identified the driver today as 37-year-old David Milner, of Napa.

Milner was driving a 2004 Lincoln LS west on Bennett Lane about a half-mile west of Tubbs Lane when the crash happened around 7 p.m., CHP Officer Jake Ramos said.

The Lincoln left the roadway and struck an oak tree, ejecting Milner, who was not wearing a seatbelt, Ramos said.

The car overturned and burst into flames. Nearby residents saw smoke and called the Calistoga Fire Department, Ramos said.

Milner was pronounced dead at 7:08 p.m. Stuart said. An autopsy is scheduled for Friday.

A unidentified motorist was killed tonight after the person's vehicle crashed head-on into a tree on Bennett Lane in Calistoga and burst into flames.

Calistoga Fire Engineer Jason Tamagni said firefighters responded to the call just after 7 p.m. Upon arrival, they found the driver ejected from the vehicle, Tamagni said.

The vehicle was "fully engulfed" in flames, he added.

"The call went out as a vehicle fire," said Tamagni. Tamagni said the vehicle fire was quickly contained but the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

There was no immediate word on the identity of the driver or on what caused the accident.

In addition to Calistoga Fire, responders included Calistoga Police, Napa County Sheriff's deputies, the CHP and Cal Fire.
