Garcia suffered internal head injuries, a fractured hip and lower left leg, and abrasions, Paniagua said. He was taken to in Napa.

Prior to the accident, the Mercedes was driving north on Jefferson Street in the left lane, Paniagua said. A northbound vehicle that was in the right lane stopped as Garcia crossed the street, he said.

Witnesses gave police conflicting statements as to whether Garcia was riding his bike or walking it in the crosswalk, but the leg injury and lack of damage to the Mercedes leads police to believe Garcia was walking his bicycle in the crosswalk as required, Paniagua said.

The collision closed Jefferson Street for about two hours during the investigation.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call Officer Gregg Lee at (707) 257-9223.
