Crash Victim Napa Resident, CHP Officer

Died Friday after motorcycle collides with back of truck on Highway 12

The California Highway Patrol released more information today about a crash that killed an off-duty CHP officer in American Canyon on Friday evening.

According to the CHP, the officer who died in the collision was a 38-year-old man from Napa.

CHP officials said a 39-year-old man from Esparto was heading east on state Highway 12 near Fairfield in his pickup truck around 5:45 p.m. Friday. After entering the left turn lane at 1687 Jameson Canyon Road, the driver spotted the motorcyclist approaching on his right, according to the CHP.

The driver sped up in an attempt to avoid the motorcyclist, but the officer collided with the back of the truck and was thrown from his motorcycle and onto the front of a Honda traveling behind the truck, officials said.

The officer was pronounced dead at the scene by arriving paramedics. Officers declined to release his name on Saturday. CHP officials said that drugs and alcohol are not considered to be a factor in the fatal crash.
