The man who led police on a lights-and-sirens chase through Napa during Monday's noon hour was still at large hours after abandoning a stolen vehicle and leaping from the Trancas Street bridge into the Napa River, according to a press release from Sgt. Mike Walund of the City of Napa Police Department.
Police were looking for a white male adult, about 6'3" to 6'4" tall and 170 pounds, with a short haircut and tattoos on his neck and arms, on suspicion of felony ecading arrest with a vehicle, hit and run, burglary and car theft, according to the police announcement, which continues:
On October 29, 2012 Officers from the Napa Police Department were dispatched to the Target store located at 205 Soscol Ave on report of a theft.
Security at Target reported that the male in the attached photos had stolen items from the store and then drove off in a red Toyota Corolla towards Imola Ave. Security provided a license plate number on the Toyota Corolla.
Napa dispatch checked the license number and advised that the Toyota Corolla was reported to be a stolen vehicle.
A short time later an NPD patrol unit saw the Toyota Corolla being driven on Trancas Street. The Toyota Corolla immediately sped off at a high rate of speed. The Officer activated the patrol car’s lights and siren. The suspect attempted to evade by driving at a high rate of speed violating numerous vehicle code sections.
During the pursuit the suspect’s vehicle collided with an uninvolved occupied vehicle at Jefferson Street at Trancas Street. The impact of the collision caused significant damage to the Corolla. The occupant in the second vehicle was not injured.
The pursuit ended when the suspect stopped the now damaged Toyota Corolla on the Trancas Street bridge over the Napa River. The suspect exited the Toyota Corolla and jumped off the bridge into the river.
A perimeter was set and NPD K-9, CHP Air Units and Napa Sheriff’s Deputies assisted with the search. The suspect was not located during the search and is still outstanding.
