A male bicyclist who rode the wrong way around a beer truck collided almost head-on this morning with a utility truck going the other way on Redwood Road west of Solano Avenue in north Napa.

Witnesses had no word on the identity of the man, who suffered serious head injuries and was transported to Queen of the Valley Medical Center.

According to witnesses, Napa County Sheriff's deputies were first responders to the accident, which occurred just before 10 a.m. today in front of the 7-Eleven store and Redwood Liquors at 2033 Redwood Road. Napa Police and Napa City Fire also responded, as did two women who said they were medical personnel.

The bicyclist, who appeared to be in his 30s and 40s, fought and struggled with paramedics for at least 15 minutes before being subdued with medication so that he could be strapped on the gurney for transport, witnesses said.

The man was riding westbound on Redwood Road when he encountered the Budweiser truck, pointed westbound and parked in the center median. The driver of the beer truck was inside a store making deliveries, witnesses said.

The cyclist decided to enter the eastbound lane to circle around the side of the beer truck, but apparently did not see the AT&T truck approaching traveling eastbound. The man and his bicycle apparently were caught between the AT&T truck and the Budweiser truck, witnesses said.

It was not immediately known what the bicyclist struck that injured his head.
