The bicyclist killed when he was struck by a vehicle on Silverado Trail near Calistoga was identified as 50-year-old Thomas Battat of San Francisco, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The collision on southbound Silverado Trail north of Clover Flat Road happened around 1:40 p.m., CHP Officer Anna Paulson said.

Battat was riding south on the right shoulder when he rode into the southbound lane of traffic directly into the path of a southbound 2000 Chevrolet Impala, Paulson said.

Battat suffered major injuries, was given CPR and was taken to Saint Helena Hospital where he died, Paulson said.

ORIGINAL STORY: 5 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2013.
A male bicyclist was killed this afternoon in a collision with a car on southbound Silverado Trail north of Clover Flat Road in Calistoga.

California Highway Patrol Officer Jaret Paulson said the crash occurred at approximately 1:45 p.m. as both the bicyclist and the car, a plum-colored 2000 Chevy Impala, were traveling southbound on Silverado Trail.

Paulson declined to release the identity of the deceased man, who was taken to St. Helena Hospital by AMR ambulance, pending notification of the next of kin. The man was riding with a woman bicyclist at the time of the crash, Paulson said.

Paulson said he had no word if the man and woman were local residents or if they were a married couple.

Paulson declined to release the name of the driver of the Impala, except to say that he was a 39-year-old Napa resident, and that he was alone in the car at the time.

The driver, who remained at the scene Tuesday afternoon with two other friends or family members, appeared distraught and was not available for an interview, Paulson said.

Paulson said the accident was under investigation, but that alcohol did not immediately appear to be a factor, he said.

"We have no indication yet," he said of the cause of the crash. "We're still trying to determine what happened."

Traffic was diverted off of  Silverado Trail at Larkmead Lane until police and firefighters were able to clear the scene at about 3:30 p.m.

Responding to the scene were Cal Fire firefighters, CHP officers, Napa County Sheriff''s deputies and volunteer firefighters from Rutherford Fire Protection District.
