AmCan Walmart Theft Prompts Police Pursuit, Ends in Crash

Police arrest a 64-year-old Vallejo man in connection with the theft.

By Bay City News Service

A Vallejo man was arrested in American Canyon early this morning after allegedly robbing the local WalMart at gunpoint and leading police on a 2-mile chase that ended with a crash into a patrol car, police said.

Police got a call around 4:30 a.m. from security officers at the Walmart at 7011 Main St. reporting that a man stole a TV and said he had a gun when confronted.

The man jumped into a car and drove onto state Highway 29, where officers spotted him a short time later.

When officers attempted to stop the car, the suspect sped away and drove into a mobile home park on American Canyon Road, police said.

The chase ended with the suspect crashing into one of the police patrol cars following him.

Officers quickly apprehended the suspect, identified as 64-year-old Robert Craig of Vallejo. He was arrested on suspicion of robbery, evading police and resisting arrest and transported to a local hospital for minor injuries before being taken to jail, police said.

No other injuries were reported.

The county should raze that Walmart store, nothing but trouble.
MICHAEL P WILSON "Independent Kid" March 9, 2013 at 04:19 pm
It would be better for ACPD to put a Police Substation in there. Any 24hr location in south county will have high crime. This was not a guy stealing baby formula. to take back to his baby momma in the Hood. 64 year old Robert Craig of Vallejo was trying to roll a 50 in TV out the door by the way he had a gun.

I do think this is is a worthy story - especially since it includes the titillating elements of a 64 year old criminal, the threat of the use of a gun in a shoplifting theft, and a car chase and subsequent crash between the perpetrator and a police car.
However, I wonder about all the shoplifting incidents at Wal-Mart that make it into the press. I am sure many other local stores have a significant number of shoplifting incidents and arrests, but probably 80% plus of those reported in the Register are for Wal-Mart. I have to think there is some reason for this that the readership is not privy to. About a year ago one of our work vans was broken into and over $2000 worth of tools were stolen. I phoned the Napa police department to report it. They directed me to go to an online form where I could make my report. They never called or came out to the location of the theft to investigate in any way. We made an online report of a $2000 theft, and that was the end of it. But for Wal-Mart, the theft of $100 worth of merchandise and a fleeing suspect that was not apprehended will make the local papers.

Anita, you have a great point.
Loui Loui March 11, 2013 at 01:24 pm
Anita, did this happen last summer and at a job site? I remember reading something similar on the other local news site.
Anita D'Groin March 11, 2013 at 05:40 pm
Nope Louise - no press or community alerts regarding our loss. The van was parked in our driveway. The thieves were probably "professionals". They popped a back door window with an automatic center punch to shatter it, poked a small hole in the shattered glass in order to pull up the lock knob, took the tools, partially closed the door so as not to make noise, and were gone.

Is there any way to remove the blogs from the news page? Blogs are not news. They are opinionRead More pieces, and I would like more news. thanks!

Hi Beau and F: Yes, the &#39 are still there and not going away. I trust that tech people areRead More working on this...Sorry. And as far as the blogs being on the news stream, I can't change that except to keep the blogs mostly at the bottom and the news on top. The new platform is designed to highlight the blogs more than they were before. Occasionally if there is a timely, useful or highly newsworthy blog post I will move it up, but in general the news will be in the first 5 slots and the blog below. Hope that helps. Keri

It is easy to judge people from a distance. All of us have up and down times in life, none of usRead More have the same internal or external supports to deal with it all. Maybe those among us who feel superior could try to take a moment or more to see life from the perspective of someone who (even from a position of pain or vulnerability) has too much pride to accept the stigma of being in need of the social translation of "the lowest of the low" homeless shelter or addiction counseling. It feels good to try lifting others up rather than tearing them down; Maybe your smile or expression of something other than disgust could make a positive difference to move a person in need toward help.

I'd like to show appreciation to my grandfather on Father's Day. He taught me how to cook a roast,Read More garden, work with tools, use a shotgun and appreciate our surrounding waters. Always a patient man, my grandfather showed me so much. I got scared once when I broke a tool when we were building a skateboard ramp. He just replied with, at least you know not to do that anymore. I always admired how my grandfather loves my grandmother so much. That's old, true love. Fairy tail kinda stuff. Love we all want to grow old with. I love my grandpa with all my heart.

Loui Loui, it's called false pretenses and misleading claims. While I understand it's not theRead More editor's or tech's fault, releasing a product to the public as "New with better features!" shouldn't mean that it comes with glitches, bugs and frustration. And unlike Google+ and FB, Napa Valley Patch didn't "come out", we had a NVP that was working perfectly fine and Corporate Patch decided to upgrade. Can you imagine the ether-riots if FB did an "upgrade" full of glitches and bugs"?
Unfiltered Steve Simoneau June 13, 2013 at 10:54 pm
Actually, Loui, I left FB two years ago and haven't been back since. And while Patch and FB may beRead More "free" services they rely on users to exist. It's a symbiotic relationship, so both sides must be content for it to work efficiently.
