2 Adults, 1 Child Narrowly Escape Flaming Overturned Car

Car rolls over embankment on Monticello Road, bursts into flames.

Two adults and a 4-year-old child escaped with their lives and only minor to moderate injuries after the car they were riding in failed to navigate a turn on Monticello Road, rolled over an embankment and burst into flames earlier this evening.

Cal Fire Battalion Chief Barry Biermann said the car was a Toyota Camry that was traveling westbound on Monticello Road, or Highway 121, near Lake Berryessa when the incident occurred. Witnesses said it took place at a sharp curve near 5585 Monticello Road.

Biermann said the car first travelled sideways on the road, hit a curb and then fell almost 50 feet down the embankment and overturned. Somehow, the two adults and child, whose names were not available, managed to get out of the car before it burst into flames.

Cal Fire Napa Capt. Jake White said the car fire burned about a quarter acre of vegetation before firefighters were able to extinguish it. The Camry was completely destroyed, witnesses said.

White said fire volunteers from Gordon Valley and Capell Valley helped at the scene. California Highway Patrol officers were also at the scene, he said.
