Hard to figure out the course of social progress in our dear old USA. In 1960s, prohibition of marijuana seemed so contrary to reason and the weed was so popular with young people, that we expected rapid reform as our generation came to power. In contrast, one of the deepest and extreme prejudices, against homosexuality, was overcome first by activism, then as side-effect of the AIDS epidemic among gay men. Now same-sex marriage is the front-line for gay people, an amazing milestone on their road from persecution to social equality. Astounding progress on one issue, little on another.
