Napa Poll: How Soon Will You Try the New Restaurant at Fagiani's?

There's a lot of excitement about The Thomas, the new restaurant scheduled to open Wednesday in the historic Fagiani's building on Main Street in downtown Napa. Do you have reservations for a table? Or are you taking a wait and see approach? Tell us!

It sometimes seems as if there are two kinds of restaurant fans in Napa: those who eagerly sample the newest place as soon as it's open, and more cautious diners who like to wait and see what others say before trying a recently-opened eatery.

Which way do you lean? Here's a chance to find out:

If all goes as planned, The Thomas and Fagiani's Bar at the Thomas will begin welcoming customers Wednesday evening.

Will you be among them? Or are you content to wait until the new place has been open for a while before you give it a try?

Take our poll, and tell us in the comments what you think.

Anyone who rushes into a new restaurant the first couple days will likely have an unforgettable experience. Unforgettable, as in: Non consumer tested menu items, staff that has never worked together, servers rushing the meal because the reservation list is crammed, kitchen staff in an unfamiliar kitchen with a non-stop flow of tickets, huge crowds creating a cacaphonic party atmosphere. You know, all those things we try to avoid when dining out. Good luck to those who MUST be the first to dine there like it mattered. I hope I'm wrong and your dining experience is the best you've ever found in Napa. I can wait until the Fagiani's machine is fine tuned. I'm sure their lease is at least a year.

USS is correct.

I agree. I always wait at least 3-4 months before trying a place. Service and food will usually be mediocre because everybody is new.

Well said.

Exciting! I attended the reception at the rooftop bar tonight, very fun and the views are fantastic. But only Domaine Carneros, Moscow Mules and similar beverages were served: no snacks. Food and diners were completely under wraps on the ground floor —literally, brown paper was taped over every door and window —and staff said the place is scheduled to open for real on Friday. So Tery ... let us know how you liked it!

Well, since I live in South Orange County now and only can come up to Napa a couple of times a year, I thought I'd give it a try when I am up there this time. Plus, I really want to see how they've renovated the old building. I was born and raised in Napa, and Fagiani's was kind of an iconic part of my youth. I can remember walking by there many times as a kid and trying to peek in those "porthole" windows, because I really wanted to see what it was like inside there!

The three of our bubbles were busted earlier this week when we were told it would be opened so made a special trip to town only to find out only to a "Special" few :( I wonder how many of them & their friends signed the petitions? So now in no hurry to rush down.

Just to let folks know, our dinner last Friday night at The Thomas was fabulous. The food was incredible and the service was impeccable, so any worries about opening night disappointments were unjustified. As an excellent cook herself, my friend is a rather tough critic of many restaurants, but she absolutely loved the food and ambiance at The Thomas. We both had their signature burger with bacon onion jam and we shared a dessert - awesome warm monkey bread with espresso ice cream and warm chocolate rum sauce. The olive oil they served with foccacia bread pre-dinner and the glass of Chardonnay I had were so good, I went out online later that night to find out where I could buy some myself! And, the total bill for 2 of us was under $55. Pretty much on par with mid-price restaurants here in OC. The rooftop terrace was not open yet (it officially opened Sat. night) but the hostess got permission to take us up in the elevator to see it. What great views! I'm coming back up to Napa in 2 weeks with my husband and I am really looking forward to eating at The Thomas again.
