Cyclist Badly Hurt in Soscol Crash

Another rider's report from the scene of a rush-hour crash that left a male bicyclist in critical condition Monday morning, according to the Napa Valley Register.

Napa resident Hank Zwetsloot emailed this message to Napa Patch Monday morning. The male bicyclist was hospitalized in critical condition following the collision, according to a report in the .

On my way to my work out at Napa College on my bicycle, I came by an vehicle-bicycle accident that had occurred just about minutes ago, at Soscol and Jackson, at approx 8:15 a.m.

A Lexus had a smashed-in windshield, a crushed bike was on the ground and an injured bicyclist was being attended by paramedics. When I came by again at 09:20 the bike and car were still at the scene and the officer directing traffic said it looked real bad and suggested prayer for the young man injured.

I have been a bicyclist for 65-plus years and have had a few close calls.
With the increased bike use the last few years and no bicycle education, accidents are going to happen more frequently.

My suggestion is that the city appropriate some money and offer bicycle training along with the bicycle routes. Also, the police should cite all the bicyclists going the wrong way on the streets and sidewalks.

Thanks, Aileen, much appreciated. Update to this sad story is that the 23-year-old driver was arrested for felony DUI: http://napa.patch.com/articles/cops-say-driver-was-stoned

May there be someone in town who can design an attractive flyer in Spanish advertising the bike clinics this May and June to be handed out to Hispanic bicyclists? I am willing to spend a few hours to park myself at various places around town, Lincoln Ave, Soscol Ave. downtown, etc. to hand some out this month. Any others willing to help? Hank, do you know Gaby at Bicycle Works on Solano? She might be the one to talk to about your excellent idea.

This week, I had just turned onto Lincoln/California, and there was a rider, in the bike lane, but going the wrong direction, towards me, and she almost got hit by me. Please make sure to wear a helmet and follow the rules and laws, and stop at stop signs, and go with traffic. It's important for drivers to be on the lookout with the start of Spring, as there's a lot of new bikers out there getting some fresh air and exercise and may not be familar with safety rules and laws.

As a bike commuter myself, I get upset when I see people doing that! We are supposed to be observing the same laws as cars; and if a car were driving against traffic in ITS lane, methinks these wrong-way cyclists would be the first to scream.
