NVOS Artist Janice Peterson

By NVOS artist Karen Lynn Ingalls

New NVOS artist Janice Peterson paints images that are taken out of their natural context, combining a realistic structure with a looseness in texture and color. She enjoys leaving room for the viewer's interpretation of the work.

Janice's current series of paintings, entitled, "Forgotten," began with the inspiration of an old railroad in McCloud, California, near Mt. Shasta, and her idea of bringing new light to what was once a thriving industry. She found herself mesmerized by this "ghostly iron graveyard of empty vessels strewn along rusty tracks; of rail-cars stacked on top of each other or laying on their sides, dented and smashed." The idea of "an iron wasteland of machinery abandoned by its creators" has emerged in these newest paintings.

Beginning with watercolor, Janice discovered acrylic painting as she worked on her Associate's degree in Studio Arts - a degree which she managed to achieve over a twenty-year period. During that time, she balanced her painting and work on the degree with the needs of marriage, family, and child raising. It was not easy, but it was well worth it, she affirms.

Also a guitarist and vocalist, Janice brings a wide-ranging creative sensibility to her work. With a strong sense of history and a focus on images of the past, preserving them for the future, Janice presents her work to Napa Valley Open Studios visitors for the first time.
