Carl Ciliax awarded public art commission

Renowned bronze sculptor and NVOS artist Carl Ciliax of Napa, California, was awarded a commission from the city of Orland, California, for the city's first piece of public art.  The six foot statue of a horse and rider titled Sagebrush and Silence was commissioned in honor of Orland's western heritage.

Ciliax is best known for his detailed bronzes of traditional western themes. The sculpture sits atop a  five foot pedestal in the heart of downtown as part of a community–driven revitalization effort.

The bronze sculpture was entirely funded by donations from individuals and groups whose names are inscribed on the pedestal base.  According to Orland Art Commissioner Rae Turnbull,  "It is unusual these days to get communities behind art projects that are not funded by cities."

Ciliax has nothing but good things to say about the community and the experience: "When the idea was first proposed I had my doubts, but they really came together and made it happen. I'm so honored and grateful to be a part of this project."

Visitors are invited to watch Carl working at his studio in Napa – Studio #30, 1044 La Londe Lane, #B – during the Napa Valley Open Studios weekends, September 21-22 and 28-29 or by appointment.  His work is also on view at Artists of the Valley Gallery, 1307 First Street.
