Behind the scenes: NVOS catalog designer Beverly Wilson

Creating Napa Valley Open Studios' full color catalog is one of the more challenging pieces of the Open Studios program. All the artist's information, along with their images and map locations, must be assembled and designed using a professional publishing program.

Selecting the catalog cover for each year is a challenge. Each year Beverly sorts through all the submitted artwork, looking for a bold, colorful image which will have wide appeal to art lovers.

The image must be memorable and strong enough to work at large and small sizes, and in both color and black and white. The object of the cover design is to entice people to pick up the catalog and see the great collection of artists inside. Usually Beverly narrows the choices down to about three and then creates mock-ups of what the catalog covers would look like. Then the steering committee reviews them and a cover is selected.

We think you'll agree that this year's cover painting, That's How I Roll, by Michael Fitzpatrick, is an exceptional choice!

(You can find more of Michael's work on his website at: www.MichaelFitzpatrickPainter.com., and you can visit him at Studio #8, 68 South Coombs Street, Studio D-9, in Napa, California, during Open Studios.)

Long time Open Studios participant Beverly Wilson has designed and produced the Open Studios catalog for six years. Before turning her attention full time to her fine art, Beverly ran her own business for many years in Napa Valley, designing labels, brochures, books and merchandising displays.

Most of the year, you'll find Beverly painting in her Napa Valley studio, surrounded by vineyards. You can visit her there during Open Studios and see the magic she creates when she's not designing our catalog – she's at Studio #30, along with bronze sculptor Carl Ciliax, 1044 La Londe Lane #B, in Napa, California. You can also find her paintings online, on her website, at: www.BeverlyWilson.com.
